Beginning therapy can feel uncertain. Here is what to expect.

You do not need to have the perfect words, a complete explanation, or a clear plan before reaching out.

What happens in therapy?

Therapy is a collaborative space to understand what is happening, identify what is keeping you stuck, and build a different relationship with difficult thoughts, emotions, memories, and behavioral patterns.

Some sessions may focus on current stressors and practical skills. Others may explore longstanding patterns or process painful experiences. We will adjust the work based on your needs, pace, and goals.

Your first session

The first full session is an opportunity to talk through what brought you to therapy, how the problem has been affecting your life, what you have already tried, and what you hope will be different. I will ask questions, offer initial impressions, and help us identify a useful direction.

You are always welcome to ask questions about the process, treatment options, privacy, fees, or anything else that would help you feel informed.

New to therapy?

It is normal to feel nervous, unsure, or self-conscious. You can begin exactly where you are. You will not be expected to disclose everything immediately, and therapy does not require you to perform, impress, or explain yourself perfectly.

How long does therapy take?

There is no universal timeline. Some people benefit from focused, shorter-term work around a specific concern. Others choose longer-term therapy to address complex trauma, entrenched patterns, or broader personal growth. We will regularly review progress and make decisions together.

Common questions about getting started

Do I need to know exactly what I want to work on?

No. Part of therapy can be clarifying what is happening and what you want to change.

Will you give me tools or homework?

When useful, yes. Skills and between-session practice are tailored to your goals rather than assigned automatically.

How often do people attend?

Many clients begin weekly or every other week. Frequency depends on clinical needs, availability, goals, and finances.

What if we are not a good fit?

A good therapeutic fit matters. We can discuss concerns openly, and I can offer referral ideas when another provider or level of care would better meet your needs.
